EastLink, the major toll road project linking the Frankston, Monash, and Eastern Freeways in eastern Melbourne is the latest to adopt SUNA Traffic Channel services. Motorists browsing the ‘EastLink.com.au’ portal can access congestion maps and other traffic information.

Since its launch, SUNA Traffic Channel has been helping navigation-equipped motorists in Melbourne’s eastern corridor minimise inconvenience during the construction phase by ensuring the new road is electronically ‘closed’ to through traffic. 

Although EastLink is yet to open to through traffic, the road geometry is already incorporated in current release navigation databases.  Many new navigation systems will happily advise routes featuring the still unopened motorway – some recent media reports of motorists blaming navigation systems on their sometimes successful attempts to circumvent entry barriers are testament to this. However devices connected to SUNA Traffic Channel services are aware of the status of EastLink, and will calculate routes taking into account the correct status of the road.
