Intelemetrics The estimated cost of traffic congestion to the Australian economy in 1995 was $12.75billion. By 2015 it is forecast to reach $30.0billion per annum. The European Personal Navigation Device (PND) market had the fastest increase in the world in 2005 and 2006, where the total sales of PND products amounted to 7.4 million units in Western Europe in 2006, with an increase to 11.8 million units forecast for 2007. Odd Spot Ants driven to road rage As we scurry around cities in our millions, human beings are often likened to ants. Now, scientists have found, the ant world is more like our own than we could ever have imagined. French researchers have discovered that ants hate congestion and behave like road rage drivers in insect "traffic jams", shoving each other aside on crowded routes. Dr Vincent Fourcassle, of the Centre for Cognitive Animal Research in Toulouse, said: "Ants are able to find a solution when faced with congestion on trails." As part of a study published today in the scientific journal Nature, the team analysed video tapes of ants to analyse collective and group behaviour. They found ants prefer to carry food along a favourite trail back to the nest and push rivals aside to maintain a steady flow. - Alastair Dalton at The Scotsman Intelematics People Intelematics has recently expanded its team and welcomes 2 news staff members: Andrew McLaughlan, who has joined Intelematics from Bosch, brings a wealth of information and skills to further develop relationships around the Suna Traffic Channel. Intelematics’ digital broadcast of real-time traffic conditions is live on the FM Network
Australia’s first digital broadcast of real-time traffic
conditions is underway on FM 101.1 taking Suna Traffic Channel
forward and underpinning a long-term agreement with a leading
commercial FM broadcaster and Intelematics Australia.
The broadcast marks a significant milestone in the rollout of Suna – Intelematics’ new real-time traffic service, transmitting comprehensive road condition information to in-car navigation systems, around the clock. The new service is being broadcast utilising an unused component of the FM spectrum to compatible navigation devices via “TMC” or Traffic Message Channel. Click here to read the full article
GM FleetView
GM Holden recently launched GM FleetView giving fleet managers all the details they need directly from the vehicle itself.
An integrated passenger vehicle fleet telematics application
introduced by Holden, GM FleetView uses GPS satellite technology
to monitor vehicle location and an in-vehicle interface unit to
retrieve data directly from the vehicle’s electronic systems.
Intelematics extended their relationship with GM Holden through the provision of the web based service which leverages Intelematics’ Telematics Service Hub (TSH) technology and provides a comprehensive suite of workforce management, asset management, and driver-safety services. An easy-to-use business/private journey button for the driver is integrated into the vehicle’s instrument cluster eliminating paper log-books. The system is integrated to GM LAN which enables a seamless user interface and access to valuable management information beyond the reach of existing aftermarket systems.
